BOOK CLUB MEETS THIS THURSDAY
The next meeting of the All Good Books group will be held this Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 7 PM when we’ll discuss “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. We had planned to discuss the book earlier but that meeting was cancelled (postponed) so we’ve got it back on our schedule.
Discussion questions are available on the book club’s website at https://goo.gl/JcGTc8.
The group is now meeting on the third Thursday of each month (previously having met on the second Thursday).
Come join us at the Mission Road Congregation of the Community of Christ (7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208). We meet at 7 PM in the Church Library or Fellowship Hall (depending on our whim at the moment).
NEW TOPIC COMING FOR ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
The Adult Sunday School Class (that has been discussing the Epistles of Paul) will begin studying “The Story of the Early Christian Church” on May 27, 2018. The first session (on the 27th) will wrap up the discussion of the Tatha Wiley’s book on Paul and begin discussing the Introduction to “The Story of Christianity: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation, Volume 1” by Justo Gonzalez.
Jonathan Bacon will lead the first session and is in the process of ordering copies of the book. We were able to find a vendor to sell new copies for a few pennies more than used copies, so the cost will be $21 per copy of the paperback book. The books will be available in class starting Sunday, May 20, 2018. If you want a copy, contact Jonathan (his phone and email are in the Church Directory). Once you receive a copy (in class), add the $21 to your offering envelop with a notation that the amount covers your copy of the class book.
ELEVATOR UPDATE
After approval by the congregation, the Pastorate contacted the World Church to arrange for a letter (for the contractors) guaranteeing that the full amount for the construction will be available from the Congregation’s investment (AIP) account with the World Church. The Bishopric has responded positively to the withdrawal of funds to fully fund the elevator project!
SUMMER 2018 WORSHIP SCHEDULE
The 2018 Summer Worship Schedule was distributed this morning at church. If you missed a copy it’s available online at https://goo.gl/Y5LUJS
ADULT CLASS ON THE EPISTLES OF PAUL DRAWS TO A CLOSE
On May 20, 2018 the Adult Sunday School Class will discuss Chapter 7 (”The Adversus Judaeos Tradition”) of the Tatha Wiley book (pages 148-168). The class will discuss: What is meant by “Shifting blame” in the chapter? What is supersessionism? What are the problems with the concepts of election and Christian exclusivism? Class begins at 9:15 AM each Sunday morning in the Church Library with Jonathan Bacon leading the discussion this next Sunday.
2018 HISTORIC CARAVAN
Thanks to everyone who has donated for this event. We currently have 47 registered campers and the Mission Center says we have reached our fund raising goals. All are welcome to join our closing service at Mission Road around 5:30 pm Saturday, June 16. Thank you for your support and continued prayers for our journey.
ADULT INFORMATION CLASS ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OF CHRIST
This new class continues each Sunday for adults interested in learning about church membership this class is informational, if class members want baptism or if class members simply want to know more about Community of Christ. Baptism is not necessarily an outcome of class attendance. The class will be held during the regular Sunday School hour (starting at 9:15 AM). Please join the class in the Chapel, taught by Karen Birkby and Ron Millard, if interested.
GENEROSITY CYCLE CONVERSATIONS
Community of Christ has begun an effort to realign the way we think about giving. We invite you to join the bigger conversation evolving across the church as we explore and journey together with this new approach. A video and survey can be found at www.cofchrist.org/generosity-cycle.

MISSED LAST SUNDAY’S SERVICE?
Would you like to hear the message from last Sunday or a Sunday service from 3 years ago? Audio recordings of many of the last several years’ worth of worship services are available online at https://goo.gl/wREl03. Note this is a new shortened URL that will take you to a Google Drive with many of the recordings from the past.
Recordings are located in folders corresponding to the year (2015, 2016, and so on). If you missed a Sunday, this provides you a way to hear the music and the message.
The beginning numbers of each filename indicate the date of the service.
The first 4 digits represent the year; the next two digits indicate the month and last two digits represent the day of the month.
In most cases, the date is followed by a dash and then the first initial and last name of the speaker. Enjoy!
NOTE: If you experience problems playing these audio files be sure you’re running the latest version of your browser or try a different browser. In some cases, you may be required to download the audio file before playing it.
The following list includes some recent audio recordings:
13 May 2018 message by David Byrn, filename 20180513-DByrn.mp3
6 May 2018 message by Jane Landrum, filename 20180506-JLandrum.mp3
6 May 2018 Business meeting, filename 20180506-Business.Meeting.mp3
CONCERNING PRAYER REQUESTS
Please know that any member of the congregation can post prayer requests or share information about members and events on the Mission Road Members Only Facebook page. You do not need to send the information for approval to anyone. In fact doing so may slow down the dissemination of your request. Be sure to include the person needing prayers and what situation has occurred (if you wish to share that information). If your post concerns an event or news item, be sure to include the basics in your posting (such as who, what, where and when).
For prayer requests, if you do not have access to Facebook, then please call Paul Bennetts our Congregational Pastoral Care Coordinator.
