MISSION ROAD CONGREGATION EVENTS AND PROJECTS

THE ALL GOOD BOOKS GROUP MEETS THIS WEEK

The next meeting of the All Good Books group will be this Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 7 PM in the Church Library. We’ll discuss "Crazy Rich Asians" by Kevin Kwan.

A link to discussion questions by the publisher is now available online on the book club’s website: https://allbooksclub.wordpress.com/2019/05/08/crazy-rich-asians-in-may/

The schedule of upcoming books for discussion is always available at https://allbooksclub.wordpress.com/meeting-dates-books/.

NOISY OFFERING

Over the next month, we’ll have two offerings during each service: the regular one and a “noisy offering” for change that will go to Camp MITIOG. So, bring your checks, cash and noisy change so we can make a lot of noise for MITIOG. All funds up to $1500 going to MITIOG will be matched by a grant fund.

If you wish to contribute directly, make checks payable to: MITIOG and put “For Camp MITIOG” in the memo. Checks may be mailed to: MITIOG, 5919 Woodson Road, Suite 211, Mission, Kansas 66202.

HVAC SYSTEM TO BE REPLACED

Work will begin this coming Friday on replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for the main sanctuary. We do not anticipate it being completed by next Sunday, so if the room becomes too warm, we’ll move the worship service into the Fellowship Hall or Children’s Library because they will not be affected by the repair work.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL TOPIC

Plans are for the Adult Sunday school class to finish discussing "The Story of Christianity: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation, Volume 1" by Justo Gonzalez next Sunday. We’ll cover the remainder of Chapter 37 “The Portuguese Enterprise” and all of Chapter 38 “The New World and the Old.” Jonathan Bacon will lead the class discussion.

On June 2, 2019, the class will begin the study of “The Story of Christianity: The Reformation to the Present Day,” Volume 2, also by Justo L. Gonzales.

We still have a few copies of the paperback edition available for class members @$20 each. If you’re interested in a copy, they’re available on the bookshelf in the Church Library. Funds for the books should be added to your weekly offering with a notation that the additional donation is for the “Adult Class Book.”

AUDIO PODCASTS

Russ May recently was able to digitize two old (1988) audio cassette tapes and make them available online. Simply go to https://bit.ly/2MSgZW8 and select the 1988 folder. The recordings include:

31 July 1988 message by Greg Stollsteimer and ordination of Russ May, filename 19880731-GStollsteimer;Russ.May.ordination.mp3

28 August 1988 message by John Pennington, filename 19880828-JPennington.mp3

If you happen to still have some of the cassette tapes made before 2012, and especially those made before 2000, Russ would love to borrow them so he can put them online. Please consider lending your church service audio cassette tapes (pre-2012) to Russ while he digitizes the recordings.

UPDATE FROM CENTRAL AVENUE CENTER OF HOPE

In the CACH Monthly Report for April 2019, they listed several items needed.

For the Kitchen: Kool aide mix, lemonade mix, milk, eggs, bleach

For the Homeless: shampoos, soaps for showers, shoes, summer items

MISSED LAST SUNDAY’S SERVICE?

Audio recordings of past worship services are available online at https://bit.ly/2MSgZW8. This is a short URL for a Google Drive folder with past recordings.

Recordings are located in folders corresponding to the year (e.g., 2017, 2018). If you missed a Sunday, this provides you a way to hear the music and the message.

Each audio recording begins with the date of the service (20190224 represents February 24, 2019). The date is followed by a dash and the first initial and last name of the speaker.

NOTE: If you experience problems playing these audio files be sure you’re running the latest version of your browser or try a different browser. In some cases, you may be required to download the audio file before playing it.

The following list includes some recent audio recordings:

19 May 2019 message by Karen Birkby, filename 20190519-KBirkby.mp3

12 May 2019 message by Clint Reine, filename 20190512-CReine.mp3

5 May 2019 message by Ron Millard, filename 20190505-RMillard.mp3

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITHOUT EMAIL OR FACEBOOK ACCESS?

If you know someone in the congregation that does not have email and does not use Facebook, please let Jonathan Bacon know. We’re trying to be sure everyone in the congregation has access to periodic news updates and information on congregational activities.

FOR FUTURE CHURCH CLOSINGS

In the future, if inclement weather forces the cancellation of church services at Mission Road, we’ll post the closing on our church Facebook page, send a message to the church email list and list the closing on KCTV Channel 5 and KSHB Channel 41.

Be sure to check the TV listings for either "Community of Christ – Mission Road" (KSHB 41) or "Community of Christ – Prairie Village" (KCTV5). The listing will be under one of those two names.

CONCERNING PRAYER REQUESTS

Please know that any member of the congregation can post prayer requests or share information about members and events on the Mission Road Members Only Facebook page. You do not need to send the information for approval to anyone. In fact, doing so may slow down the dissemination of your request. Be sure to include the person needing prayers and what situation has occurred (if you wish to share that information). If your post concerns an event or news item, be sure to include the basics in your posting (such as who, what, where and when).

For prayer requests, if you do not have access to Facebook, then please call Paul Bennetts our Congregational Pastoral Care Coordinator.
