REVISED COVID CHURCH GUIDELINES

Dear Mission Road Congregation,

Our primary focus is concern for the most vulnerable among us – those with immune disorders, underlying health conditions, and those who may not had a shot. Our concern extends to not only members but guests who might join in our worship. Because we have their interests at heart, we show compassion by moving cautiously as we continue with in-person worship.

Many of you have approached us with questions on when we would be able to lift the mask mandate and after consultation with the mission center, masks will no longer be required at church. Some may wish to wear their masks and social distance. We ask that whether masked or unmasked, we do not pass judgment or make assumptions about our brothers and sisters in Christ. Masks and hand sanitizer will continue to be available. Hymnals will also be returned to the pews.

Our congregation is a community and so much of our closeness is built upon personal connections. While we will not yet be providing a morning breakfast, we invite people to arrive early to fellowship and gather. Hand shaking and hugging is okay if both parties are comfortable with it. Just please be mindful that the transition from isolation to togetherness is a journey that some may take more cautiously than others. We ask that you respect each other even in your desire to express love and care.

For anyone who needs water, they are welcome to bring their own with them. This includes coffee or tea from outside our building as we will not be providing any snacks or drinks. We do have some small bottled water in the refrigerator in the kitchen.

We acknowledge these pasts several months have been a struggle for all of us. It’s critical that we refer to the primary focus listed above as we move forward. Let us remain mindful of the most vulnerable among us and keep our enduring principles as a church ever at the forefront of our thoughts, especially these: the worth of all persons, the sacredness of creation, responsible choices, unity in diversity, blessings of community.

Announcements will be made to provide additional information about our gatherings. These guidelines will apply to all in-person meetings including Sunday School. We will continue to provide Sunday School, and Sunday Worship via Zoom as well as in-person worship at Church. If, you have any thoughts or concerns that you’d like to share with the pastors privately, do not hesitate to contact us.

Blessings to all, Larry & Karen Birkby, Co-Pastors

IN-PERSON AND ZOOM CONGREGATIONAL WORSHIP TIMES

The Congregation will offer a combination of in-person and online meetings using Zoom. The access weblink for all Zoom sessions is the same and listed below.

7 PM Every Wednesday – Prayer Circle on Zoom.

9:15 AM Every Sunday – The Adult Sunday School Class meets in the church sanctuary and on Zoom.

10:30 AM Every Sunday – Sunday Morning Mission Road Worship in-person and accessible on Zoom.

We are excited to have our building back open for in-person worship as well as enabling access by Zoom for those who wish to worship from home. We are providing in-person worship as much as possible under the guidelines. It is our desire to meet in-person as well as providing a worship service that those on Zoom can enjoy.

We are looking at other internet service providers and hope to update the audio & visual equipment in the next few weeks. We will provide more information as we learn about our options.

MISSION ROAD MESSAGES/SERMONS ON YOUTUBE

If you missed a Sunday morning message (sermon or homily), you’ll now be able to view them on YouTube. The Community of Christ – Mission Road channel can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiCbae5dTgl0cmF9b672skAyPXl-5o1lM (Or by using the shortened, easier to remember weblink: https://tinyurl.com/MissionRoadYouTube).

We are only posting the sermon or Sunday message portion of each service due to copyright concerns. Also please note that in some cases, Zoom failed to record the service.

New videos will be posted as soon as possible following each message/sermon.

TITHES AND OFFERINGS

Please remember that church expenses continue. If you are not attending in-person please remember to support the church financially. Mary Reichenbach, the Congregation’s Financial Officer has indicated that contributions can be mailed to her house (10223 Briar Dr., Overland Park, KS 66207) or the church (7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208), or you can sign up for eTithing on the World Church website https://www.cofchrist.org/etithing). Any of these options will enable you to continue your regular contributions.

If you use the eTithing site, select the United States link and then scroll down to Mission Road Community of Christ. When you click on that page, there will be an option in the upper right-hand corner to ’sign up’ to create your account and enter either your bank account information for direct debit or a credit card to charge your contribution, or ’sign in’ if you have already set up your account. You may also choose a one-time contribution or a continuing contribution. Most of the contribution options on our tithing envelopes are available on the Mission Road eTithing page. If you have additional questions about electronic contributions, please contact Mary.

CONCERNING PRAYER REQUESTS

Please know that any member of the congregation can post prayer requests or share information about members, and events on the Mission Road Members Only Facebook page. You do not need to send the information for approval to anyone. In fact, doing so may slow down the dissemination of your request. Be sure to include the person needing prayers and what situation has occurred (if you wish to share that information). If your post concerns an event or news item, be sure to include the basics in your posting (such as who, what, where and when).

For prayer requests, if you do not have access to Facebook, then please call Paul Bennetts our Congregational Pastoral Care Coordinator.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITHOUT EMAIL OR FACEBOOK ACCESS?

If you know someone in the congregation that does not have email and does not use Facebook, please let Jonathan Bacon know. We are trying to be sure everyone in the congregation has access to periodic news updates and information on congregational activities.

A celebration of Frances’ life will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the 11:00 am Celebration. Both will be held at the Mission Road Community of Christ Church, 7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas.

DR. AVIS GARRETT BAPTIST CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Please join us in celebrating Avis Garrett-Baptist’s life on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mission Road Congregation of Community of Christ, address 7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. If you have a piece of art you created with Dr. Avis, please bring it to share on the display table for that day as part of the celebration. Please no flowers and no donations.

PRAYERS REQUESTED

Paul and Nadine Bennetts’ brother-in-law, Bob McDermid (married to Nadine’s sister Terry), was tragically killed in a car accident that resulted from an impaired driver fleeing a police pursuit. Bob was a retired Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at Missouri Southern University. He and wife Terry have been active in the Joplin Community of Christ (where Terry is now Pastor). Prior to taking his position in Joplin many years ago, Bob and Terry lived in Lawrence and were well-known in the Mission Center (then it was the Kaw Valley District). Bob was a new grandfather. His grandson was born on Nadine’s birthday (June 24th), and thankfully he had gotten to meet the new baby before the accident. Please remember the McDermid, Zahniser and Bennetts families in your prayers.

The Sunday, July 11, 2021, the worship theme is “Delight in God’s Presence.” Jennifer Libeer will offer the message. Jane Landrum will preside and Caryn Brown will serve as the worship planner. 2. Families and those from the same household may sit together.

3. Congregational singing without a face mask in place will be deferred until Johnson County, Kansas reaches the 80% protected status. Humming or singing softly with face mask in place is acceptable.

4. Restrooms are to be used by a single individual at a time with cleaning between uses. Disinfectant wipes will be provided, for the member to wipe down all surfaces touched before and after use.

5. Members are encouraged to move outside immediately after each worship service for additional conversation.

Thank you for your willingness to put the concerns and health of others above your own personal convenience.

New videos will be posted during the week following each message/sermon.

And More…

APOLOGIES!

Our apologies are offered for the delay in starting the adult class this morning. Our internet connection was offline, and it took several minutes to identify the problem. Ultimately the Wi-Fi router had to be reset. Sorry for the delay. We are looking at other internet service providers and hope to update our audio & visual equipment in the next few weeks. We will provide more information as we learn about our options.

PRAYERS FOR THE PAGAT FAMILY

Please remember the Preston Pagat family. Preston and his wife Dawn have been members at the Highlands (I think Dawn works for the Church and is sister to Kat Hnatyshyn who is on the Midlands MC Presidents team). They had gone to Camp Doniphan to set up for the Youth Retreat this weekend. Preston collapsed suddenly and died before the ambulance could get there.

This is a great sadness for the family, Highlands and Shawnee Drive communities and for the Mission Center. Please keep Dawn and their children and family in your prayers.

By the way, the storm Friday also knocked out the power at Doniphan, damaged the dam and drained much of the main lake and caused tree damage. The campers tried to make the best of it but after 24 hours of no power and facing a boil order for their water supply, they decided to release the campers Saturday evening. Jessie Bennetts had been a counselor at the camp and this was a disappointing and difficult weekend for all.

DR. AVIS GARRETT BAPTIST CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE

Please join us in celebrating Avis Garrett-Baptist’s life on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mission Road Congregation of Community of Christ, address 7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. If you have a piece of art you created with Dr. Avis, please bring it to share on the display table for that day as part of the celebration. Please no flowers and no donations.

COVID CHURCH GUIDELINES

Because we have their interests at heart, we show compassion by moving cautiously as we return to in-person worship. In essence, this means continuing to wear face masks, continued social distancing, and limiting singing, for the time being. Guidelines for in-person worship and adult class at Mission Road include:

1. Masks are required of everyone in addition to social distancing, except for the speaker at the podium.

5. Members are encouraged to move outside immediately after each worship service for additional conversation.

Thank you for your willingness to put the concerns and health of others above your own personal convenience.

THIS SUNDAY’S WORSHIP

The Sunday, June 20, 2021, the worship theme is “Come in the Name of the Lord.” Paul Bennetts will offer the message. Mary Reichenbach will preside and Kennetha Kuttler serve as the worship planner. Kennetha will also provide the PowerPoint and host the Zoom session assisted by Roxann Kosmicki as co-host.

You are invited to join us at church or online for worship starting at 10:30 AM.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING COVID CHURCH GUIDELINES

We understand that over the past couple of weeks there has been confusion on the Mission Road Congregation’s current response to the Covid pandemic and we apologize for not being clearer.

Our primary focus is on concern for the most vulnerable among us – those with immune disorders, underlying health conditions and those who cannot for some reason take the vaccine (including young children who are not yet able to be fully vaccinated). Our concern extends to not only members but guests who might join in our worship. Because we have their interests at heart, we show compassion by moving cautiously as we return to in-person worship. In essence, this means continuing to wear face masks, continued social distancing, and limiting singing, for the time being.

While the rules in general society are being relaxed, its noteworthy that doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other areas where a mix of vaccinated and the most vulnerable individuals gather, continue to work together for the protection of everyone by requiring masking and social distancing. We believe the church should fall in that category of caring.

After consultation with the Midlands Mission Center, the Mission Road Congregation will follow these guidelines (note that following these guidelines enable our congregation to meet beyond the 45-minute gathering time limit suggested by the World Church):

1. Masks will be required of everyone in addition to social distancing, except for the speaker at the podium.

2. Families and those from the same household may sit together.

3. Congregational singing without a face mask will be deferred until Johnson County, Kansas reaches the 80% protected status. Humming or singing softly with face mask in place is acceptable. The county is currently (June 2, 2021) at 44.9% fully vaccinated and 52.3% partially vaccinated. The 80% is based on the recommendation of Sing! The Center for Congregational Song (https://congregationalsong.org/covid-updates-congregational-song/).

4. Restrooms will be used by a single individual at a time with cleaning between uses. Disinfectant wipes will be provided, and the member should wipe down all surfaces touched before and after use.

5. Mission Road will hold in-person adult Sunday school class in the sanctuary immediately preceding the worship service (class at 9:15-10:15 AM with worship from 10:30-11:30 AM). Masks and social distancing will be required for both.

6. Members will be encouraged to move outside immediately after each worship service for additional conversation.

7. The Mission Road Congregation will continue to offer access to the adult Sunday school class and worship services using Zoom for those who are not able or chose to not attend in person.

8. Prayer Circle will continue as a Zoom only meeting at this time.

9. Face masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes will be provided.

Thank you for your willingness to put the concerns and health of others above your own personal convenience.

Be sure to check and highlight the dates and assignments you have for the next quarter.

THIS SUNDAY’S WORSHIP

The Sunday, June 6, 2021, the worship theme is “Love Relates Us.” Karen Birkby will offer the message. Kirk Barnhard will preside and serve as the worship planner. Robert Sindt will provide the PowerPoint and host the Zoom session assisted by Paul Bennetts as co-host.

You are invited to join us at church or online for worship starting at 10:30 AM (new time).

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM

The Mission Road Adult Sunday School Class is now studying “Speak to The Bones: How to Be a Prophetic People in a Time of Exile” by Richard A. Brown. This coming Sunday, Jane Landrum will continue the discussion of Chapter 3 (“Amos: Injustice and Judgment”). The class session begins at 9:15 AM (new time) each Sunday morning in the church sanctuary and on Zoom.

WELCOME BACK FOR IN-PERSON WORSHIP

We’d like to invite members and friends to return to the church building for worship. We’ve been separated for far too long! We encourage everyone to review the “Gathering Guidelines” that follow and join us in our church home. We’d especially encourage those who are scheduled to participate in the service to do so from the sanctuary.

Please note the time changes with class starting at 9:15 AM and worship at 10:30 AM.

GATHERING GUIDELINES

The World Church and Midland Mission Center have lifted many of the restrictions for church gatherings. Church members should continue to be aware of guidance from the CDC and your own personal physician.

The congregation’s actions both individually and collectively should emphasize preventative strategies to keep from spreading any viruses to our friends and neighbors, especially those who might have underlying conditions. Please use wisdom in your health choices especially as they affect others.

Because of relaxed CDC guidelines and evidence that those who have recovered from COVID or have been fully vaccinated are at a very low risk of contracting or spreading the virus, we feel it is time to relax the guidelines for in-person worship.

Specifically, Mission Road

· Will not require masks though if you choose to wear one, we respect your decision to do so (disposable masks are available, if you need one).

· Will provide hand sanitizer for those who wish to use it.

· Will provide for social distancing as needed for your protection (please talk to the deacons if you need assistance in finding a space that you feel comfortable in). If you choose to social distance at a greater distance than is available in the Sanctuary, the Fellowship Hall is available with sound (speakers) and chairs.

· If you are feeling ill or running a temperature or have been recently exposed to someone who is sick, please refrain from attending in-person. Worship recordings will continue to be available online.

We should all proceed cautiously and make responsible choices that emphasize the well-being of individuals, the congregation, and the communities in which our members and friends live.

If you have concerns, please speak to the Pastors, members of the Pastorate or any priesthood member.

New videos will be posted during the week following each message/sermon.
