UPCOMING EVENTS
MARK SCHERER, CHURCH HISTORIAN, CHATS WITH ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
The Adult Sunday School class concludes its study of Mark Scherer’s "The Journey of a People: The Era of Reorganization, 1844 to 1946" this Sunday with a visit from the author. Bring your questions for Mark. He may also want some reactions from the class on his two-volume history.
PAPER DRIVE CONTINUES!
The Central Avenue Center of Hope’s Paper Drive continues until October 25, 2015. All paper items desperately needed (paper plates, dessert plates, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, cups, spoons, forks, knives, and more)!
Also Coats, Jackets, Blankets, and any donations of this type are always accepted (Is it time to clean out your closets?). If we as a congregation can make a concentrated effort to donate now through October 25, it will help meet the tremendous needs that come with winter; so many people are truly in need.
And don’t forget: Food items are always needed!
CAMP MITIOG UPDATE
As of August 25, 2015, the camp is short $6,500 in meeting expenses. We borrowed from our reserves to pay all camp bills this year but would really like to break even if possible. We maximized our Camps for Kids Grant this year, which helped significantly, but camp expenses were higher. We had 57 campers, which is the maximum we can serve each year, which is great, but the cost is higher. Please consider sending your donation to:

COMING IN OCTOBER
Based on a vote in the Adult Sunday School class we’ll begin studying The Secret Message of Jesus: Uncovering the Truth that Could Change Everything by Brian D. McLaren this month. In the book, McLaren invites the reader to discover afresh the transforming message of Jesus – an open invitation to radical change, an enlightening revelation that exposes shame and ignites hope, an epic story that is good news for everyone, whatever their gender, race, class, politics, or religion.
Our tentative schedule for the coming weeks in the Adult class follows:
Sunday, October 18, 2015 – Epilogue in Volume 2 of Scherer’s history. And wrap up with open discussion of questions or comments about the 2 volume church history. Most of the class teachers will be present to lead the class discussion.
Sunday, October 25, 2015 – Introduction and Chapter 1 ("Troubling Questions about Jesus") in The Secret Message of Jesus. Jonathan Bacon will lead the class discussion.
Copies of the book are available for $15.50 for the paperback (which includes taxes); a savings over the retail price of $15.99 (before taxes). If you want a copy, contact Jonathan Bacon. The cost of the book should be added to your Sunday offering with a notation that it covers the cost of the book. The book is also available from Amazon.com for the Kindle or Kindle app @ $8.99.
