GOFUNDMISSION OPPORTUNITY

From Clint Reine: I just wanted to make everyone aware of an opportunity to help a young adult college student (formerly a very active teenager who went to all our MMC summer camps) from the Highlands Congregation. Nick has helped out with a lot of youth events here at Mission Road. He is studying Religion at Graceland University and was selected by World Service Corps to go help the Community of Christ in England at Dunfield House. He needs to raise funds (through the World Church affiliated "Go Fund Mission" website. If you are able to give any amount of money he would be very appreciative. His parents, by the way, have been Camp Directors for Junior Camp for many, many years and even helped at YouthQuest, which is held in our own building. This is a very active family in our Church, Mission Center, and have been helpful to Mission Road on many occasions. Your donations will therefore help someone who is going to help our church and a person who has helped Mission Road.

You can donate at: https://www.gofundmission.org/projects/wsc-nick/

If you wish to donate by check, please send a check made payable to – Community of Christ – USA Fields; GoFundMission, 1001 W. Walnut, Independence, MO 64050. Please include your e-mail address and identify which project you are wishing to support.

Check out the website for more detailed information about Nick and his World Service Corps project.

UPCOMING MISSION ROAD CONGREGATION EVENTS AND PROJECTS

DO WE STILL NEED A PRINT NEWSLETTER?

Question: With two Facebook pages (one public and one open just to members of the congregation), a website (www.mission-road.org) and a weekly email newsletter to everyone with an email address, does the congregation still need a printed/mailed quarterly newsletter?

As you all know Norman Bernauer was the editor of the quarterly newsletter that gets mailed out to the Mission Road membership. With Norman’s passing we have had no one volunteer to fill this role.

So we (the Pastors) need to hear from you. Let us know if you have an interest in volunteering or let us know if you feel there is/isn’t a need to continue the mailed, printed newsletter.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS DISCUSSES CHURCH HISTORY

This Sunday, the Adult Sunday School class will continue discussion of Chapter 17 and 18 in Mark Scherer’s "The Journey of a People”, Volume 3. Jonathan Bacon will lead the class discussion.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Avis Garrett-Baptist was admitted to ER early Sunday morning with nausea and vomiting. She has since been moved to the Cardiac Care Unit at Shawnee Mission Hospital. Please remember Avis & Jeremy in your prayer time.

THANK YOU AND A COUPLE OF ITEMS STILL NEEDED!

The family of Andrew Smith (Bernice Smith’s eldest son) would like to thank all those in the congregation who donated clothes and toys for the family to help in their move to this area.

There’s still a need for diapers (size 6 pullups) and wipes plus a small bed for 3-year-old daughter Zendaya. If you can help, please contact Bernice at 913-944-1591.

UPCOMING MISSION ROAD CONGREGATION EVENTS AND PROJECTS

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

Mark your calendar for the Mission Road Good Friday service on Friday, April 14, 2017 at 7:00 PM. Pastor Karen Birkby will preside and the Saints Chorale will provide an evening service of music. Please join us for an evening of fellowship, music and inspiration!

EASTER BREAKFAST POTLUCK AND EASTER EGG HUNT!

Plan now to join your friends at Mission Road for an Easter morning potluck starting at 8:45 AM. Bring your favorite breakfast dish or casserole. If you have any questions, contact Marge Trinkl.

There will also be an Easter Egg Hunt, coordinated by Alisha Morse, for all the children.

There will be no adult class that morning; instead we’ll just enjoy good food and conversation

EASTER DECORATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed on Saturday morning, April 15 to help decorate and setup for Easter morning. If you’re available, please sign-up to help starting at 9:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017. No excuses, your taxes should be finished!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS DISCUSSES CHURCH HISTORY

This coming Sunday, April 9, 2017, the Adult Sunday School class will continue discussion of Chapter 17 starting on page 438 in Mark Scherer’s "The Journey of a People”, Volume 3. Be sure to also read Chapter 18 as we hope to discuss that chapter. Jonathan Bacon will lead the discussion in the Church Library!

We’ll also have a special guest (Margaret Athey) who will talk about some of the opposition to priesthood calls for women in the mid-1980s.

ASSISTANCE NEEDED!

The family of Andrew Smith (Bernice Smith’s eldest son) has moved to this area. The family includes Roxanne Pela, the mother of Zendaya (3-year-old girl) and Andre (one-year-old boy). They are in need clothing (size small girl’s 5t tops, pants size 5t, shoes 10c and boy’s size 6 for diapers, top size small 2t, pants size 2t and shoes 7c), used toys (they have no toys at all), bedding and food to get them established here. If you can assist in any way, please contact Bernice at 913-944-1591.

CAN YOU SPARE A CAN OR BOX OF FOOD?

Mission Road Congregation donated 70 lbs. of food to the Center in February. Figures for March are not available yet but can you image what we could accomplish in April if every family brought one box or can of food each Sunday? When you’re shopping this week, remember the Central Avenue Center of Hope food pantry that served 206 households last year!

NEXT MEETING OF THE ALL GOOD BOOKS GROUP

The next meeting of the All Good Books discussion group will be on Thursday, April 13, 2017 (Thomas Jefferson’s birthday) at 7 PM in the Church Library. The group will discuss “Two If by Sea” by Jacquelyn Mitchard. Please plan to join us!

HMA’S PROFESSIONAL NURSE SAIRA GIRON IN GUATEMALA WITH TEAM

Greetings on a beautiful day in February,

The Team from HMA and Oak Grove Missouri CofC congregation are back safely from our travels and work in Guatemala. Saira, HMA’s professional nurse from Honduras was able to come to Guatemala to assist with medical needs and to develop relationships with the team and the Guatemala HMA members and staff. I reminded the Team that for each person that travels out of the country- there are as many as 100 people who make it possible between donations, supplies, and prayers.

We had a wonderful week of building a structure that will be used for health clinics and community meetings. The nurses of our group along with Doctora Garcia ran a health clinic for the community. We saw 52 patients at this first community health clinic in Panatzan. The following day the nurses evaluated all 76 students at the school, taught and observed each one brushing their teeth, and applied fluoride treatment. We also had a Physical Therapist who checked for scoliosis, limb strength, gaits, and joint mobility at the clinics.

Saira noted that the poverty level of this village was similar to her villages in Honduras. She expressed that she saw many things that gave her ideas of how to provide better care to her patients in Honduras. She had never been to Guatemala and I doubt she had ever taken a vacation. The final afternoon Saira was excited to be able to do a little bit of shopping when we returned to Antigua. She was picked up by the shuttle service at 3am the next morning for the 3 bus changes and 15 hour ride back to her home. (It only took us 5 hours of air time.)

My husband, Gary, leaves for Honduras on Saturday with Dr. Mike Duke, a translator, and 3 sonographers to work with Saira in her rural villages and with the education program, Friends of Education, Honduras. Please add a little prayer for them next week!

Next month, when I report, I’ll have an update about their trip. Until then…..

Paula Rummel, RN, B.A.

HMA International Committee Chair
