UPCOMING MISSION ROAD CONGREGATION EVENTS

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE CAMP MITIOG FUNDRAISER!

Thanks to everyone who helped and supported the Camp MITIOG Fundraiser Saturday evening. The evening netted the camp $4,021.50. Way to go!!

CENTRAL AVENUE CENTER OF HOPE PAPER DRIVE

Underway is the annual congregational paper drive to help the Central Avenue Center of Hope, August 1 – September 25, 2016.

The CACH needs 25,000 of each of the following items for serving food to our clients:

8–9” foam plates; 5–6” dessert plates; 5–7 ounce cups; 5–7 ounce foam cups; 12 ounce foam bowls; 4–6 ounce dessert bowls; napkins, paper towels; and toilet paper.

Our congregation has entered a little friendly competition (we want the trophy that will be given at the Fall Mission Center conference. CACH uses a formula to be fair to all congregations, large or small (the number of items given divided by our September 18th attendance).

The Central Avenue Center of Hope continues to respond to the mission of "abolishing poverty and ending suffering." Thousands of meals are served each year to individuals and families through your continued generosity. Please join us in this important ministry. No gift is too small.

DIRECTORY MAILING ADDRESS CHANGES WELCOME!

Please email (mrcoc ) or provide Clint with a written update to any addresses or name changes for the congregational directory or newsletter mailing list. Certain college students and a few others have moved since October/November of last year and we are getting a number of newsletters returned for incorrect address information. In short order there will be a final proof copy of the directory made available in the fellowship hall for you to have one final check. NOW is the time to send Clint any new information that has obviously changed.

MONTHLY OFFERING ENVELOP PACKS

The world church has begun charging local congregations $.45 per month per person to mail offering envelopes to each home. Over a 12 month period that adds up ($5.40 per person per year), especially when multiplied by the number of members in the congregation. If you are giving online (see https://www.cofchrist.org/give) or do not need envelopes sent to your home each month, please contact Pennie Bunkers. She’ll cancel the envelopes and save the congregational funds for other purposes.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE CONTINUES

The start of school is as close as the middle of August and students need to START school with the necessary school supplies so the next couple of Sundays are crucial! Every year many students go to the first day of class without the supplies they need to be successful. Now’s the time you can help by buying and bringing supplies to help students succeed.

There’s a table in the Narthex where you can add your contribution of school supplies. Further, there’s a handout with typical supplies for grades Kindergarten through fifth grade.

Even without the list, we can assure you the following items are in great demand for elementary school students: boxes of Kleenex, boxes of #2 pencils (24 count), boxes of crayons (24 count), Clorox wipes, bottles of hand sanitizer, black dry erasers, composition notebooks, pink erasers, small ear buds, pencil bags, quart zip lock bags, package of glue sticks, pages of index cards, children’s scissors, packages of multicolor construction paper and more!

Help a child with the supplies they need for school success!

POSSIBLE ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS TOPICS FOR AUGUST AND BEYOND

Based on the current schedule, the adult Sunday school class will finish discussing the “Words of Counsel” by the last Sunday in July. In order to acquire teachers and allow preparation time for the next topic, the class will need to determine the course of study in the next couple of weeks.

During the last class vote, the study of the life and works of Paul was the second highest vote getter. However, we want to offer class members a chance to consider several topics (including a study of Paul). The following books/topics have been suggested for consideration:

Encountering Paul: Understanding the Man and His Message by Tatha Wiley (preface plus 8 chapters).

Description: Fascinating, controversial, yet enigmatic, the figure of the apostle Paul looms large in Christian history. But which Paul is the true one? Is it the Paul who proclaims our freedom in Christ or the Paul who demands that slaves obey their masters? The Paul who works closely with women evangelists, or the Paul who instructs women to submit to the rule of their husbands? Is it the deeply Jewish Paul or the Paul who rejects the Law? Drawing on the literary and historical insights that have revolutionized contemporary Paul scholarship, Tatha Wiley skillfully separates these different voices of Paul and their liberating and oppressive legacies. In her well-crafted work, Wiley not only illumines the authentic, historical Paul but also accounts for his influence in the history of slavery, male domination, and religious exclusivism. Encountering Paul is a welcome addition to the Come and See series.

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat by John Ortberg Jr. (preface plus 10 chapters).

Description: Winner of the 2002 Christianity Today Book Award! You re One Step Away from the Adventure of Your Life Deep within you lay the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus. In what ways is the Lord telling you, as he did Peter, "Come"? John Ortberg invites you to consider the incredible potential that awaits you outside your comfort zone. Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you in ways that will change you forever, deepening your character and your trust in God. The experience is terrifying. It is thrilling beyond belief. It is everything you would expect of someone worthy to be called Lord. The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God s purpose for your life in the process. There’s just one requirement: “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat."

Islam and Christianity: Theological Themes in Comparative Perspective by John Renard (9 chapters plus epilogue).

Description: In light of the widespread public perception of incompatibility between Islam and Christianity, this book provides a much-needed straightforward comparison of these two great faith traditions from a broad theological perspective. Award-winning scholar John Renard illuminates the similarities as well as the differences between Islam and Christianity through a clear exploration of four major dimensions—historical, creedal, institutional, and ethical and spiritual. Throughout, the book features comparisons between concrete elements such as creedal statements, prayer texts, and writings from major theologians and mystics. It also includes a glossary of technical theological terms. For western readers in particular, this balanced, authoritative work overturns some common stereotypes about Islam, especially those that have emerged in the decade since September 11, 2001.

Jesus: The First Century Rabbi by Rabbi David Zaslow (256 pages)

Description: This bold, fresh look at the historical Jesus and the Jewish roots of Christianity challenges both Jews and Christians to re-examine their understanding of Jesus’ commitment to his Jewish faith. Instead of emphasizing the differences between the two religions, this groundbreaking text explains how the concepts of vicarious atonement, mediation, incarnation, and Trinity are actually rooted in classical Judaism. Using the cutting edge of scholarly research, Rabbi Zaslow dispels the myths of disparity between Christianity and Judaism without diluting the unique features of each faith. Jesus: First Century Rabbi is a breath of fresh air for Christians and Jews who want to strengthen and deepen their own faith traditions.

The Journey of a People: Volume 3: The Era of Worldwide Community by Mark Scherer (Have not seen the book yet so I don’t know how many chapters).

Description: This 685-page book recounts the church its journey from 1946-2015. It focuses on the church’s evolution from Latter Day Saint identity to worldwide community. The third and final volume in this popular series by Mark A. Scherer gives readers explanations, stories, anecdotes, and illustrations. In addition pictures, maps, and illustrations add another dimension to understanding this period of history.

Of Water and Spirit: Preparing for Baptism and Confirmation in Community of Christ (12 chapters).

Description: The path to baptism and confirmation is just the start of the journey in the life of all disciples. This attractive adult book is geared toward 2016 reunions and family camps. It offers a wealth of guidance that will help people understand and deepen their discipleship. Unlike the similarly named book for children, this 12-lesson offering focuses on leading youth, adults, and seekers into deeper understandings of discipleship as they prepare for the sacraments. Note: This is intended as a pre-baptismal text for adults but might also be a good review for all members.

The Top Ten Things Dead People Want to Tell YOU by Mike Dooley (10 chapters plus an epilogue).

Description: If the dead could speak, don’t you wonder what they would say to those of us they’ve left behind? What would they tell us to soothe our sorrow for their loss, calm our fears of what happens when we die, and fire us up to live the best possible lives we can right now?

In pages filled with wisdom, humor, and, yes, joy, New York Times best-selling author Mike Dooley explores our most pressing and profound questions about the afterlife—and this life—from the fresh perspective of those who have made the transition to the next phase. Among the revelations and insights they share: We were ready; you are not. There’s no such thing as a devil or hell. We’re sorry for any pain we may have caused. Your pets are just as crazy, brilliant, and loving here as they were there.

Nothing we say can prepare you for the beauty of the moment you arrive.

You’ll learn that our loved ones are not lost to us; that our time on earth is both a school and an adventure; that, all appearances to the contrary, life truly is fair; and that we have it in us to reshape our own fortunes, starting today.

What Every Christian Needs To Know About The Jewishness of Jesus by Rabbi Evan Moffic (224 pages)

Description: If you were to ask ten people, who started Christianity? You might hear ten voices giving the same quick response: Jesus. But those ten people would be wrong. Jesus wasn’t a Christian. Jesus lived and died as a Jew. Understanding the Jewishness of Jesus is the secret to knowing him better and understanding his message in the twenty-first century.

Walking through Jesus’ life from birth to death, Rabbi Evan Moffic serves as a tour guide to give Christians a new way to look at familiar teachings and practices that are rooted in the Jewish faith and can illuminate our lives today. Moffic gives fresh insight on how Jesus’ contemporaries understood him, explores how Jesus’ Jewishness shaped him, offers a new perspective on the Lord’s Prayer, and provides renewed appreciation for Jesus’ miracles.

In encountering his Jewish heritage, you will see Jesus differently, gain a better understanding of his message, and enrich your own faith.

This coming Sunday, June 26, 2016, everyone is invited to a discussion of the recent 2016 World Conference led by Evangelist John O’Neal. Everyone is invited and all delegates and attendees are urged to attend and share their experiences.

REGARDING PRAYER REQUESTS

Please know that any member of the congregation can post prayer requests or share information about members and events on the Mission Road Members Only Facebook page. You do not need to send the information for approval to anyone. In fact doing so may slow down the dissemination of your request. Be sure to include the person needing prayers and what situation has occurred (if you wish to share that information). If your post concerns an event or news item, be sure to include the basics in your posting (such as who, what, where and when).

For prayer requests, if you do not have access to Facebook, then please call Paul Bennetts or John Trinkl Sr., our Congregational Pastoral Care Coordinators.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to capitalize on the generosity of this group. Therefore, we will be hosting a Show and Share Dinner. Participants will buy a seat at a table. If they buy a complete table space ($100. – 8 people) they will then decorate the table with a theme of their choice. If they share a table with others, all those sponsoring the table will work together to decorate it. The evening will also include a silent auction in conjunction with the meal. Members of the CAMP MITIOG board will present the entertainment and an evening of information. The cost for each chair space will be $12.50. Checks need to be in by July 24th to assure your donation is matched. Remember it is a charitable donation and Camp for Kids will match the funds you donate when you purchase a seat or table. Sunday, July 17, 2016 – Session Eleven: Spiritually Forming Communities – discussion led by Dennis Wood

Sunday, July 24, 2016 – Session Twelve: This Burden and Blessing – TBA.

Sunday, July 31, 2016 – Session Thirteen: Trust in this Promise – discussion led by Jonathan Bacon

The following books/topics have been suggested for consideration. If you’d like to add another topic to the list, email or call Jonathan Bacon ASAP, so your suggestion may be added to the list for consideration. Here are the six suggestions to date:

“Encountering Paul: Understanding the Man and His Message” by Tatha Wiley (preface plus 8 chapters).

“If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat” by John Ortberg Jr. (preface plus 10 chapters).

Description: Winner of the 2002 Christianity Today Book Award! You’re One Step Away from the Adventure of Your Life Deep within you lies the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus. The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God’s purpose for your life in the process. There’s just one requirement: “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat."

“Islam and Christianity: Theological Themes in Comparative Perspective” by John Renard (9 chapters plus epilogue).

“The Journey of a People: Volume 3” by Mark Scherer (Have not seen the book yet so I don’t know how many chapters).

Description: Follow-up to the first two volumes, covering 1947 – present (?).

“Of Water and Spirit: Preparing for Baptism and Confirmation in Community of Christ” (12 chapters).

Description: This is intended as a pre-baptismal text for adults but might also be a good review for all members.

“The Top Ten Things Dead People Want to Tell YOU” by Mike Dooley (10 chapters plus an epilogue).

Description: “I know this may come as a shock, and you know I’m not fond of using stale one-liners, but—‘reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.’ I’m as alive now as I was on the day we met, except, maybe, more so.”

If the dead could speak, don’t you wonder what they would say to those of us they’ve left behind? What would they tell us to soothe our sorrow for their loss, calm our fears of what happens when we die, and fire us up to live the best possible lives we can right now?

In pages filled with wisdom, humor, and, yes, joy, New York Times best-selling author Mike Dooley explores our most pressing and profound questions about the afterlife—and this life—from the fresh perspective of those who have made the transition to the next phase. Among the revelations and insights they share:

• We were ready; you are not.

• There’s no such thing as a devil or hell.

• We’re sorry for any pain we may have caused.

• Your pets are just as crazy, brilliant, and loving here as they were there.

• Nothing we say can prepare you for the beauty of the moment you arrive.

You’ll learn that our loved ones are not lost to us; that our time on earth is both a school and an adventure; that, all appearances to the contrary, life truly is fair; and that we have it in us to reshape our own fortunes, starting today.

MISSED LAST SUNDAY’S SERVICE?

Audio recordings of many of the last several years’ worth of worship services are available online at https://goo.gl/wREl03. UPCOMING EVENTS: WEEK ENDING JUNE 5

WE’RE ALL ON THE JOURNEY

Whether you are packing a suitcase in preparation to attend World Conference or you are deciding how many live webcasts to watch from your home, we are all on this journey to Conference together.

This week we invite you to hold all those who will be traveling over the next few weeks in your prayers. Below are three simple travelers’ prayers from a variety of sources that you can use in addition to your own prayers.

Orthodox Christian Prayer

“Be mindful, O Lord, of those who travel by land, by sea, and by air; of the old and young, the sick, the suffering, the sorrowing, the afflicted, the captives, the needy and the poor; and upon them all send forth Thy mercies, for Thou art the Giver of all good things. Amen.“

Anglican Prayer

“O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: preserve those who travel; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.“

Source Unknown

“Lord, be our guide and our protector on the journey we are about to take.

Watch over us. Protect us from accidents.

Keep us free from harm to body and soul.

Lord, support us with Your grace when we are tired.

Help us be patient in any trouble which may come our way.

Keep us always mindful of Your presence and love. Amen.“
